Where are all the firefighters? Why were the cops sent? Why are the people praying? And shouting “It’s the end, repent!”?
Why are all the teachers on the verge of crying? What’s happened to everyone? What’s with that loud siren?
Why couldn’t we go outside? Just let us kids play! Why should we have to keep inside? And in our books all day?
Why, Mrs. DeLollis, is everyone so afraid? Why are the cops outside marching on parade?
Ah, here’s Mrs. Thompson, looking tired and forlorn. But why is she scrambling… and shouting up a storm?
“America’s under attack!” The tired teacher shouts. The students become unnerved, but their faces show their doubts.
“It’s true, my students! The towers were brought down!” So, that’s why you’ve all gone mad. Why fear has filled the town.
But…why, Mrs. Thompson? Who would attack us? Still no answer, Not from bell to bus.
Not even at home will anyone speak free. Instead we all just sit, to wait and to see.
So, not one of the adults, not one has told the lie. Neither they nor we can truly say… .Why?
