“In order for there to be life, then evil must be countered by good. Yet, without evil, good cannot exist. Our masters, these self-proclaimed “heroes”, these white knights who we have allowed to grasp power, they are no better than the evil they combat…Yet they pretend themselves morally superior, and command of us the same. In this way, they have cast us all into doubt, and condemned us to confusion. It was for this purpose that Instinct was created; it exists as a moral identifier.
As for our masters? They are not heroes of fiery justice, nor are their foes the harbingers of cold death. They are the Lukewarm Pretenders, the Self-Deceiving Actors! They are neither truly good nay even decent, for good is at best honest and at worst foolish, and they are deceptive yet intelligent. However, they are not evil either, for evil actions at their worst still have some greater purpose, and are at times necessary in our lives, yet these actors enact solutions that seem good, but are used for purely evil intention. I was not sought after for justice, I was hunted out of fear. I was not arrested for murder; I was imprisoned for bruising the collective ego. And Saturday, I will be executed not for shedding innocent blood, but for recognizing and denouncing my captors for what they truly are.
My actions were evil and I do not deny this. However, they were necessary. Necessary to gain greater attention, people. To say this message: With the false heroes, there is no purpose other than to die for their own selfish interest. But with Instinct, there is a greater purpose, and that is to show our humanity and to reveal what is needed for life to continue. If one desires to be good, then let him strive to be good. If one’s purpose lies with evil, and he has submitted himself to that, let him at least be honest about it. Struggle is natural, for we are all only human.
That is the message Instinct sends, that is what I have come to say: Your heroes are human, not all they do is good, and the time has come for us all to accept that. That includes you, my captors. Until that day comes when the heroes have accepted their responsibility and guilt, Instinct will continue to fight: to provide you clarity, and allow you to choose a side.”
-This is an excerpt from "Broadcast" the third part of my short story, Instinct. In it, the young killer Brandon Gardner addresses his fellow countrymen and explains the motive behind his grisly actions.
