A Reason to Care
Nathan had never cared for anybody his entire life. He would go throughout his days wandering and searching, never actually knowing what he was looking for. Nathan had been around for a long time, for Nathan was a vampire. Along with being a vampire, he gained the gift of immortality. Too bad that in Nathan’s eyes this gift was more like a curse.
When he was a human, Nathan had no parents, no friends, no one to love or to care about. His human life started with loneliness and it ended in loneliness. After he had been bitten and changed into a vampire, Nathan found a clan with which he felt he could belong. However, this feeling did not last long. As time passed, Nathan grew to realize that the goals of the clan were not his own, so he left the clan and started off by himself.
Nathan wandered aimlessly for a long time. Days became months, months became years, years became decades, and decades became centuries. Still Nathan wandered, never aging, never staying in one place for an extended amount of time. It was as if time stood still for him.
As he continued these journeys he never grew any kind of attachment to anyone. He didn’t make any friends and he didn’t take any interest in anybody. He just tended to isolate himself from the world. That was what he had grown accustomed to; loneliness and solitude. He didn’t take part in the normal activities of the modern humans because he felt that it wasn’t worth the effort. He thought humans weren’t worth the effort. Some might take this as an insult, but since he didn’t think much of humans, he didn’t have a reason to feed off of them.
This was good for any town he visited because he never attacked anyone. In fact, he visited many towns and by the time he had left, no one had even noticed that Nathan existed. His abnormal unsocial behavior let him drift in and out of places like he was a ghost.
While he was wandering, Nathan came upon a small town and even though he didn’t know it at the time, there was something in this town that would change the way he viewed the world forever.
Nathan spent a few days in the town and saw nothing that interested him. He had even decided to move on and leave the town. But when the day for him to leave finally came, Nathan saw something that shocked him beyond all belief. While walking down the street Nathan came to a corner. He turned the corner and was forced to stop in order to let a girl pass him. Now normally Nathan would have bumped into this girl without even caring, but there was something about this girl that forced Nathan to stop. Something Nathan had never felt before and whatever it was, he was now following the girl because of it. He didn’t know what was going on but it was like gravity pulling him toward the girl.
Nathan had no idea what he was doing or why, but with every step he got closer to the girl. And every time he got closer, the more the unnatural feeling grew. He was getting extremely close to her. So close that if he reached out his hand, even slightly, he could touch her.
He heard someone yelling. Nathan could see two more girls rounding the corner in the opposite direction. They were yelling and waving and coming toward the girl. He used his speed and got away from the girl before the others had noticed him. He placed himself in a tree across the street, making sure he could still see the girl. She started talking to the other girls and Nathan realized that they were friends.
He may not have liked that the other girls had interrupted his observation of their friend, but he now knew that he had gained something from the exchange. Nathan had heard everything the girls had been yelling and out of the screams he had learned a bit of information that he valued very much. Nathan had learned the girl’s name.
Her name was Anna. No last name had been said, but for some reason that was enough for Nathan. Anna continued on with her friends and they all walked to school together. The strange part of this scenario is that Nathan still continued to follow her. Even when Anna was in class, Nathan found ways to be able to see her. He hid outside where he could look into the windows of the school without being seen.
As he watched her, Nathan wondered why he was acting this way. The only answers he could come up with were that Anna was the most beautiful person he had ever seen. The glow of her face, the beauty in her smile, and the look in her eyes told Nathan that she was a kind person with one of the purest souls known. This was all he could come up with for an answer and for some reason it was enough to satisfy him.
School quickly ended for Anna and she went home. Once again, Nathan followed her, never letting her out of his sight for more than a few seconds. He stayed close to her house and even as Anna went to sleep he perched himself outside of her window so he could watch her.
Nathan began to think to himself again and he soon realized what the odd feelings he felt were. Even though he knew nothing about this girl, and she didn’t even know he existed, Nathan cared for this girl. He cared for her happiness, her safety, and her life. However, even though he felt this way about Anna, old habits die hard. Nathan had spent his entire existence alone and he wasn’t confident that he could live his life with another person in it. And there was the simple matter that his world was so much different than hers.
Being a vampire was not easy. His world was cruel and harsh. His life was hard and he had to fight just to survive sometimes. These situations had made him cold and tough. Nathan couldn’t bear to see that happen to Anna. He couldn’t let his own selfish desires corrupt and change this wonderful young girl. So instead he decided to live his life for her.
Wherever Anna went, Nathan was close by, watching over her, making sure she was safe and happy. He did this for many days. Those days turned into weeks, the weeks into months, and the months into years. Anna never knew about Nathan and that he was acting as her guardian. But as long as Nathan could watch her and know that she was happy, he was perfectly fine with that because knowing that Anna existed gave Nathan feelings he had never felt before. It gave him hope for this world; it gave him something to care for.
