Dark Moon
The night seemed endless. I felt as if my body was going to collapse at any moment. My heart was throbbing, my pulse racing, and all my limbs were numb. I still kept running. If I stopped, even for a second, I knew that would be the end of me.
So I ran, thinking about how this nightmare had begun. It was like any other day. I had completed all my chores and was getting ready to go inside. Dusk was approaching and all the town’s shops were closing. No one was ever out after the sun had set because that’s when “they” came out.
These horrible creatures had terrorized our village for decades, claiming anyone unlucky enough to be outside after the sun had went down. People sealed their windows and locked their doors so the creatures couldn’t get inside. This night would be no different for me except when I was inside my house I could not find my little brother. I had sent him to feed the cattle a few hours ago, but surely it would not take him this long to do such a simple task.
The sun had yet to set so I ran toward the fields, hoping I would find him there. In the middle of the field he laid with a gash on the side of his head and blood running down his face. One of the cows must have kicked him. But at that moment, finding out what had happened to my brother was the least of my worries. I looked at the ground and saw that my shadow was starting to disappear. The sun was setting. I ran to the barn near the field and laid my brother in one of the empty stalls. I ripped the bottom part of my dress and wrapped it around my brother’s head, hoping that would help stop the bleeding.
I looked out the barn door and saw darkness. The full moon was the only thing that lit the night sky. I knew that the barn doors wouldn’t hold back the creatures. I had two choices. My brother and I would die together, or I could give the creatures a challenge. I walked outside and sealed the barn door from there. I ran through the corn fields hoping that the creatures would get confused and lose my trail. I moved in the most ridiculous patterns I could think of until I reached the fence. I jumped over it and found the road that led back to the village.
I started making my way back, but I saw something farther along in the road. A cloaked figure was standing in the middle of the road. The only visible characteristic was the glowing red eyes that were locked on me. I saw the bottom part of its face start to move. That’s when I saw the shining white teeth revealed through its crooked, devious smile. They were so white, the moonlight looked as if it was reflecting off them and making them shine. The most noticeable thing about them, however, was the two sharp canines. As soon as I saw them I knew what it was, so I started to run away toward the forest.
I looked back to see if it was following me, but it was just standing there as if it didn’t have to run to catch me. All it was doing was standing there with its hood on its head, eyes glaring, with the evil smile on its face. I ran through the trees and started weaving through the woods while dodging the branches. Every couple of seconds I would hear a rustle of the leaves or the snap of a twig from behind me. I only ran faster because of these sounds, hoping I could get away, praying that it wouldn’t catch me.
Then the worst thing possible happened. I fell over the top of a fallen branch and fell to the ground. Right then I knew my life was over and everything was going to end. Before I could even turn onto my back, I felt a chill run down my spine and I knew that the creature was behind me. I turned and saw it standing over me, looking down on me. I saw his leg move, and I was flying through the air, crashing into branches and trees until I finally stopped and landed by the lake. How could I go that far just by being kicked once? As soon as I landed the creature was once again standing over me.
It started to move and I saw its hands move towards the hood of its cloak. It lifted the hood off of its head and I saw its face for the first time. It looked just like any other man. He had long, dark hair and smooth, pale white skin. His red eyes were very bright and were staring down at me. Even knowing that I was in grave danger, looking at his beautiful face, I couldn’t help but feel at peace. The overall beauty of his face was mesmerizing and all I could do was gaze at him. He looked as if he had twitched, but in reality, he had made one movement and was suddenly kneeled down next to me, and had a hard grip on my throat. There wasn’t any time for me to feel anything; no pain, no fear, nothing.
There was nothing but a sharp pinch on my throat and then I knew that he had bitten me. Slowly I felt the hot liquid run down my throat as he sucked my blood. I began to feel all my strength leave my body. I was numb and the life had been drained from me completely. I felt his lips leave my throat as he dropped me to the ground.
I looked at his face once again as he wiped my blood away. I was surprised when I saw his eyes. He wasn’t showing any expression. His eyes revealed nothing, no sense of victory, no joy. There was nothing that showed he had accomplished anything; I was just another victim to him.
I pondered all this as he slowly walked away, jumped, and lifted himself into the air. It was almost like watching an angel fly away but in the back of my mind I knew this was not the case. I turned my head toward the moon reflecting on the lake. It seemed darker than usual but I didn’t have much time left to think about such a thing, so I looked at the moon, closed my eyes, and slowly let myself drift away.
I felt my life, like a burning candle, slowly flicker and go out. Ending all and becoming nothing, just like my killer’s soulless eyes.
