Tense, wirey, hicks, hillbillies, spit in the dirt and spray cuss words like spitting snakes, burn eyes and lungs, clench their tight small fists, their twisting arms, and hit cha' in the eye. Then they'd be amused, grouped together behind a row of pickups. Scraggly, unkempt young'ens tell you in a wide-eyed, serious, as-a-matter-of-fact way about where to find the best moonshine and about who the best banjo pickers are, spit and shoot pool in a beer joint.
Woodsmen, mountaineers, keen and mean, the serious slits of their eyes, sly snakes, killers, but smarter than you, cut your throat, attack you diagonally like the single tooth of a wolf and dump you in a sick hole or hollow and never again think of you. You'd be a long dead and gone family secret.
Mean fire in a stove, behind a grate, and a burning gizzarded old man sitting on a bucket with a jug, holed up in a trailer like an angry possum, uses backhands and gravelly hollered commands, family or foe, scratched from the thicket, hickory woods, hell bastards, broken backs.
Bad cussin's men gave, suicide back in the mountains, some shot in the head.

Hey Raymond--I like this poem really well. The descriptive words are sharp and portray an element not seen by gentler people. Very indicative of people nearby that I have encountered. Great work. Keep it up!!! I am much better now, but must save some money for gasoline to travel. Hope to see you this summer!! -----deb
