Friends in the Dark
Darkness. Many people’s lives are consumed by darkness. They’re lost, confused, just trying to get by in a world they’ve grown to hate. Some of them rise above it and find happiness. Others just give up and fade into the darkness.
Among these people are two girls in particular that stand out among the crowd. This is the story of two friends named Katie and Jill. And how one fateful day changed both their lives.
On the surface, you would think that there was nothing special about Katie and Jill. You would think that they’re just two average middle school kids. But if you take a closer look, you’ll find more problems than you would expect.
Katie is a young, bright girl full of kindness and joy. Her mother died when she was still very young and her father has some deep-seeded issues caused by his alcohol addiction. She is an excellent student but her teachers worry about her lack of social skills.
The other kids don’t like Katie because she wears long sleeves and baggy clothes. But they don’t know that those sleeves conceal bruises Katie gets when her dad has a drunken fit.
Katie’s only friend is Jill. Jill’s life seems very different from Katie’s. Jill lives with her mother in a nice neighborhood with very kind people. Jill doesn’t do very well in school and hasn’t made very good decisions for herself. Jill’s been a little troubled ever since her father went and joined the Marines and got sent to Iraq. This will be the third year he’s been gone.
Katie and Jill are two totally different people. But fate has brought them together and led them to the event that will change both of their futures forever.
It started out as any normal day. Jill just got off the bus and was making her way to the school door. But she suddenly heard a voice that sounded like Katie. She ran to the area where she heard the voice and saw Katie on the ground with two boys standing over her. Jill started running toward Katie, yelling at the boys to get away from her. The two boys ran as Jill helped Katie up.
“Katie! What happened?” Jill asked. “Oh, it was nothing. They just pushed me down,” Katie replied. “Why?” Jill asked. “They said that the reason my clothes didn’t fit was because I stole them from a store,” Katie said. “What? That’s awful! Where are they? I’ll give them a piece of my mind!” Jill yelled. “Jill, Jill! It’s okay. You don’t have to do that. I know I didn’t steal anything and that’s good enough,” Katie said. “How do you stay so positive all the time?” asked Jill. “I don’t know. I just think of happy times in my life like my mom teaching me how to make cookies. Or the first time we met. Do you remember that?” Katie asked. “Yeah, we were on the hill behind the cemetery picking flowers.” Jill said.
They suddenly heard the school bell ring. “Well, I guess we’d better get to class”, Katie said. They both rushed into the school and ran to class. Later that day Jill got a test back from the teacher and got upset because of the grade. She then thought of Katie’s advice and started thinking of something positive. Jill thought of the time her dad took her horseback riding. She remembered how much fun it was and just started to smile. She opened her eyes and looked at Katie with a big grin and saw Katie smile back. That was the happiest Jill had felt in a long time.
That night Jill was home watching television when she heard the phone ring. She heard her mother answer and continued watching her show. After her mother hung up the phone, she called Jill into the living room. She said she had some bad news.
Apparently Katie’s father had one too many drinks that night and did something very bad. He did the unspeakable. Jill cried herself to sleep that night.
The next day Jill sat in school with her head hung low and a dead look in her eyes. She raised her head and looked across the room to an empty desk that Katie used to sit in.
Time passed and most people forgot about the incident and about Katie. But one girl visits the cemetery every Sunday and brings fresh flowers. She puts them on the stone where her best friend’s name is written.
Darkness. Katie and Jill were two young girls lost in this complex world, just trying to find their way out of the darkness. People like Katie, without the choice of their destiny, and those like Jill, whose destiny is intertwined with others, sometimes lose their way. But they never give up in their struggle to open their eyes to the light and to the happiness of a better world.
